Es stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit historische Wetter- und Klimaverläufe vergangene Gesellschaften beeinflusst haben. Oft werden, im Alltagsverständnis und der Wissenschaft, verschiedene Theorien herangezogen, um Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Klima und historischer Entwicklungen herzustellen bzw. zu erklären. In dieser Arbeit werden zunächst naturdeterministische Erklärungsmodelle vorgestellt, die eine monokausale Wirkung des Klimas auf Gesellschaften vorgeben. Am Anschluss werden der sich davon abgrenzende Ökologische Ansatz und die Quellenlage beschrieben. Als weiterer Punkt wird zur Erklärung der Quellenlage auf die Forschungsrichtung der historischen Klimatologie eingegangen. In Kapitel 5 wird, angefangen von der Antike über das Mittelalter bis zur Neuzeit in groben Zügen aufgezeigt, welchen Einfluss das Klima auf die menschliche Kulturgeschichte hatte.
