Kann Werbung die Einstellung der Konsumenten verändern und auch in tatsächliches Verhalten eingreifen, welches in Form von Konsumentscheidungen sichtbar wird? In der Werbeindustrie gibt es auf der einen Seite die ökonomische betriebswirtschaftliche Perspektive, bei der sich ein Werbeerfolg an Absatz und Gewinn ablesen lässt. Auf der anderen Seite steht die vorökonomische bzw. psychologische Perspektive im Sinn einer Werbewirkung, bei der es um Information, Imagebildung und Sympathie geht.Das entscheidende Kriterium der Unternehmen ist dabei der "Return of Investment" (ROI), das Verhältnis zwischen Werbeinvestitionen (Werbedruck) und Absatz- bzw. Gewinnsteigerung. Dem ökonomischen Erfolg vorgelagert und auch für diesen verantwortlich ist der Prozess der Werbekommunikation, d.h. der Erfolg der konkreten Werbekampagne. Bei der Werbewirkung spielen psychologische Fragestellungen eine Rolle. Wie wird Werbung überhaupt wahrgenommen und wie wird sie verarbeitet? Welchen Einfluss haben unterschiedliche Kommunikationsstrategien auf Gedanken, Gefühle und Verhalten der Verbraucher? Kann durch Werbung eine Identifikation mit einem Produkt hergestellt werden? Welche Rolle spielen Bilder in der Werbung und wie werden so genannte innere Bilder in den Köpfen der Konsumenten verankert? Die Werbeindustrie arbeitet mit so genannten Imagerystrategien in Anlehnung an Untersuchungen der kognitiven Psychologie. Es soll aufgezeigt werden, wie bestimmte biologische und kulturelle Schemata auf Menschen wirken und dadurch Schlüsselbilder und Verhaltensmuster entstehen, die in der Bildkommunikation gezielt eingesetzt werden können.Über das Thema der Lebensstile wird ein erster Einstieg in das Thema der Identifikation mit Produkten vorgenommen.
Lebensstile drücken sich expressiv über den Konsum und die Nutzung von bestimmten Marken oder auch Dienstleistungen aus. Man kann bei einem demonstrativen Konsum von Produkten auch von einem bestimmten Markenstil sprechen, den eine bestimmte Lebensstilgruppe hat.
