Tra queste due date, con cui si apre e si chiude il libro, vi è l'epopea di Marcella, figlia di Martino, costretta ad abbandonare Zara, la sua città assediata dalle bombe, e a tentare insieme al marito un viaggio della speranza che la porterà dopo innumerevoli impedimenti a rivedere l'Italia. Ma le difficoltà di Marcella e della sua famiglia non si concludono con l'arrivo nel Belpaese: c'è la guerra, prima di tutto, una guerra iniziata sul fronte jugoslavo e conclusa sul fronte interno. E poi ci sono gli italiani, che guardano con curiosità, e a volte con imbarazzo, queste strane figure che prendono il nome di "profughi": né italiani né croati. Peggio: italiani per i croati e croati per gli italiani.
Con una scrittura chiara e limpida Pietro Prever ci accompagna in un viaggio che avrebbe dell'inverosimile se non fosse tutto documentato, un viaggio compiuto da uomini costretti a fuggire da altri uomini, come tante volte è avvenuto in passato, e come ancora oggi troppo spesso vediamo accadere davanti ai nostri occhi. Un dramma, quello dei profughi dalmati e istriani, sepolto per decenni e solo da poco emerso dal buco nero dell'indifferenza generale della politica e della cultura nostrane.
Il pescatore non è un saggio storico e non è un romanzo: è la testimonianza vera di una vita straordinaria, quella di una donna obbligata a lottare con tutte le sue forze per poter conquistare la propria libertà e legittimare giorno dopo giorno il suo cammino di conquista della felicità.
Fa da corredo al testo un'appendice in cui l'autore illustra schematicamente i più importanti (e terrificanti) genocidi della storia dell'umanità perpetrati negli ultimi cinque secoli, un lavoro di ricerca documentaria da cui partire per riflettere su cosa siamo stati capaci di fare e allo stesso tempo impegnarci a evitare di ripetere sempre, alla stregua di novelli Sisifo, gli stessi errori.
