Die theologische Begründung des Amtes kann nicht anders als im Rahmen des für das Amt konstitutiven heilsgeschichtlichen Kontextes erfolgen, d.h. sie muss den inneren Zusammenhang mit dem Geheimnis der Kirche, mit der Sendung Jesu Christi und mit dem Wirken des Heiligen Geistes angemessen berücksichtigen - und zwar im Zueinander dieser Perspektiven gemäß der Struktur der Oikonomia. Der vorliegende Text zielt auf eine Klärung der Theologie des Amtes aus den Wurzeln. Dabei kann das Amt nicht losgelöst von der Geschichte seiner Ausprägungen betrachtet werden, die im Kontext vielfältiger charismatischer, geistesgeschichtlicher und sozial-institutioneller, gesellschaftlicher und politischer Faktoren konkret hervorgegangen sind. Vor dem Hintergrund der dogmen-, geistes- und kirchengeschichtlichen Entwicklungen geht es im zweiten Teil des Buches darum, die Theologie des Amtes in systematischer Perspektive zu reflektieren.

Das Buch bietet einen Überblick über die vielfältigen geschichtlichen Entwicklungen des Amtes in der Kirche, entwirft ein systematisch-theologisches Profil des Amtes und versucht eine tragfähige Antwort auf die Frage, was das Amt eigentlich "ist".
