Il fine di tutto il suo predicare era quello di riportare l’esperienza umana alla necessità dell’unificazione con il principio divino. Nella Grecia antica si imprimeva questa necessità alla gente per mezzo della massima “Gnosi se auton” e nel oriente “Atmanam atmana pasya”, ciò in ambedue i casi significa “Conosci te stesso”. Così si esprime anche Eckhart: “Chi vuole penetrare nel fondo di Dio, in ciò che ha di più intimo, deve prima penetrare nel fondo proprio, in ciò che ha di più intimo, giacché nessuno conosce Dio se prima non conosce se stesso”. È a partire da questo che Meister Eckhart, con la sua predicazione, vuole riportare l’uomo a comprendere quell’armonia che lo aiuterà a superare ciò che corrompe la sua unità con Dio.
