Das A usmaß und die Geschwindigkeit, mit denen sich die Menschheit scheinbar unaufhaltsam vermehrt, sind mehr als Besorgnis erregend. In immer kürzeren Zeitspannen gibt es immer größere Zuwächse. Im Jahr 1800 beherbergte unser Planet noch eine Milliarde Menschen. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts lebten bereits ca. 1,6 Milliarden Menschen auf der Erde, bis zum Jahre 1925 waren es zwei Milliarden, 35 Jahre später schon drei Milliarden. 1974 wurden vier und schon 1987 fünf Milliarden Menschen gezählt, der bisher letzte Milliarden-Sprung wurde am 12. Oktober 1999 aus der bosnischen Hauptstadt Sarajevo vermeldet.

Und unser Verbreitungsdrang scheint keine Grenzen zu kennen: Momentan wächst die Weltbevölkerung etwa um 1,2 Prozent oder 77 Millionen Menschen jährlich, laut UN-Prognose werden im Jahr 2050 rund 9,3 Milliarden die Welt bevölkern.
