Demographische Entwicklungen entfalten sich in langen Zeiträumen. Geburtenhäufigkeit, Sterblichkeit und Wanderungen bestimmen den Umfang und den Aufbau einer Bevölkerung. Die resultierende Bevölkerungsstruktur setzt den Rahmen für die weitere Entwicklung. Im gesamten Bundesgebiet Deutschlands ist die zukünftige demographische Entwicklung durch niedrige Geburtenhäufigkeit und steigende Lebenserwartung geprägt. Die Folgen sind Alterung und Schrumpfung der Gesellschaft.

In dieser Abhandlung wird im Folgenden dargestellt, was genau unter dem demographischen Wandel zu verstehen ist und von welchen Faktoren er abhängt. Dabei steht zunächst die allgemeine Beschreibung im Vordergrund, bevor explizit das Beispielland Deutschland analysiert wird. Um den demographischen Übergang zu erläutern, ist es notwendig bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückzugehen. Nach der generellen Behandlung der konstitutiven Merkmale einer Bevölkerung – Fertilität, Mortalität und Migration – wird, basierend auf der 10. koordinierten Bevölkerungsvorausberechnung des Statistisches Bundesamtes, die Bevölkerungsentwicklung in Deutschland bis zum Jahr 2020 bzw. 2050 analysiert. Den Abschluss bilden eine Betrachtung der Auswirkungen des demographischen Wandels auf das Erwerbspersonenpotenzial und eventuelle Ansatzpunkte einer demographieorientierten Politik.
