‚Brent Spar’ 1995 im Nordatlantik zu versenken, begann ein beispielloser
Kampf zwischen der Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace und dem
Ölkonzern. Diese Auseinandersetzung führte schließlich zu einem der
größten Boykotts in Deutschland seit 1933. Große Teile der deutschen
Bevölkerung erklärten sich mit den Zielen von Greenpeace solidarisch und
mieden die Tankstellen von Shell. Mit medienwirksamen Aktionen
opponierte Greenpeace gegen die umweltverschmutzende Versenkung der
Offshore-Anlage und versuchte stattdessen den Rückbau des Ölspeichers
an Land durchzusetzen (Klaus 1997: 101). Erst als der Shell-Konzern am
20. Juni 1995 (Schubert 2000: 225) den ursprünglichen Entsorgungsplan
verwarf und die Demontage an Land bekannt gab, glätteten sich die Wogen
und der Boykott wurde eingestellt.
Das Ziel dieser Hausarbeit ist es, das Phänomen ‚Boykott’ auf seine Effekte
hin zu untersuchen, d.h. herauszufinden, welche Konsequenzen der
Boykottaufruf gegen Shell hatte. Diese Analyse soll unter der Fragestellung:
‚Welche Effekte hat die politische Verbraucherartikulation durch Boykott?
Eine beispielhafte Analyse anhand des Shell-Boykotts 1995’ erfolgen. Um
das Thema in einen größeren wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhang zu
stellen, wird der Analyse eine Einführung in die Konsumforschung
vorangestellt. Hierbei soll neben einer Definition des Begriffs ‚Konsum’ auch
eine Darstellung der verschiedenen Formen der Verbraucherartikulation
erfolgen. Der Boykott als eine der drei Artikulationsformen wird dann einer
eingehenden Betrachtung unterzogen. Im dritten Teil der Arbeit, dem
Analyseteil, werde ich die von dem Boykott betroffenen Dimensionen einzeln
analysieren. In 3.1 werden die Auswirkungen des Boykotts auf Shell
untersucht und die Macht der Verbraucher dargestellt. Zudem wird auf das
Image von Shell in Verbindung mit der vorherig lancierten Werbekampagne
eingegangen. 3.2 befasst sich mit den Effekten des Boykotts für
Greenpeace. Auch hier werden das Image und die Finanzen im Fokus der
Analyse stehen.
