Sie ist allgegenwärtig. Die Werbedichte ist so gewaltig, dass jeder Konsument pro Tag mit etwa 3000 Werbebotschaften konfrontiert wird - egal ob im Fernsehen, Radio, Internet oder im Rahmen der Printwerbung. Die steigende Reizüberflutung durch immer mehr Medienangebote und Werbung, macht es Unternehmen zunehmend schwerer, ihre Werbebotschaften zu platzieren: Denn den Informationsaufnahmekapazitäten der Konsumenten sind enge Grenzen gesetzt. Nach Esch führen „das wachsende Informationsangebot auf der einen und die begrenzten Aufnahmekapazitäten bei den Konsumenten auf der anderen Seite [...] zu einer drastischen Informationsüberflutung im Sinne des Informationsüberschusses.“ Für Deutschland hat das Institut für Konsum- und Verhaltensforschung bereits 1987 eine Informationsüberflutung von 98 Prozent errechnet: Das heißt, dass durchschnittlich gerade einmal 2 Prozent der dargebotenen Informationen wahrgenommen werden! Daher schalten viele Menschen einfach ab: Sie ignorieren Rundfunkspots, überblättern großformatige Zeitungsanzeigen oder gehen in der Werbepause einfach in die Küche oder ins Bad. Das Ergebnis ist eine vermeintlich sinkende Werbewirkung: Während 1985 noch 18 Prozent der Werbespots erinnert wurden, waren es 2002 nur noch 8 Prozent. Und obwohl die Werbebudgets von 1990 bis 2000 um 175 Prozent gestiegen sind, ist die Markenerinnerung um 80 Prozent gesunken. Aus diesem Grund ist es heutzutage umso wichtiger, sich durch eine ansprechende Gestaltung der Werbung von der Masse abzuheben und sich die größtmögliche Aufmerksamkeit im Dschungel der Werbeimpulse zu sichern.
